The Satan Syndicate | DJ

The Satan Syndicate were formed in the late 90’s by Matthew Lewis & Nick Shute. The two met partying at raves put on by the infamous Mission Impossible Cru. They soon realised they had similar musical tastes and started DJing together and putting on their own free parties. The first of these was held at a function centre in the heart of rural West Wales during Christmas 1998, which packed in over 300 people. These events were prematurely ended when they were consistently raided by police and closed down.

Both DJs had been buying records for years previous to meeting and were introduced to dance/rave music as a whole at a much earlier age by older siblings.

Nick: “I first started buying hardcore records in ‘92 from a shop in Pembroke Dock called Clubscene, which was run by a bloke called Clifford Williams (DJ CLH). I was about 10 or 11 at the time & had totally falling in love with the music, pitched up vocals & beats I’d never heard before. I remember the first time I went in there the owner found it quite amusing that I wanted hardcore records at such a young age as the scene was still a very underground thing”.

Matt [aka Mash] got into dance music a little later listening to mix tapes from Dreamscape and Helter Skelter which he was passed via his older sister who was also a DJ at the time.

When the two met a few years later, they were both playing Drum & Bass. Influenced by the likes of Hype, Bad Company, Andy C & Ram Records, the two of them set about making a name for themselves on the local drum & bass scene playing for the likes of Justice, Hypnosis and Diversion in Swansea, The Evolution Experience, The Palace, Fatlace, Industry in Haverfordwest & Inner Rhythm which Nick co-promoted - as well as various free parties including Lomas’ Birthday bash on the Gower in Swansea which was a personal favourite for the pair.

In more recent years the two have carved themselves a solid reputation as DJs, landing residency with West Wales drum & bass event M4WEST playing alongside Pendulum, Goldie, John B & Mickey Finn. They describe their sets as new, old & gold drum & bass. Sitting Gridlok, The Upbeats, Sub Focus, Ed Rush & Optical as some of their favourite producers at the moment.
